  • Optional Practical Training
    Once you complete your study degree, you’ll be granted an Optional Practical Training (OPT) visa that’ll let you work in the field related to your area of study so that you can gain some practical experience. The OPT is valid for 12 months, and 17 in the case of a STEM OPT extension. During this time you might even be hired by a company that’ll sponsor your H1-B or work visa.

USA’S EDUCATION SYSTEM

American colleges and universities offer three basic programs:

  1. Associate’s Degree – This is an academic program taken by students after secondary school, prior to a Bachelors course. It provides students with basic academic and technical knowledge and skills necessary for employment or for furthering their education.

  2. Undergraduate – The duration of undergraduate programs in the US is four years. Since associate degrees are cheaper than bachelor degrees, many Americans prefer to go through two years of associate degree leading to two years of their chosen undergraduate program.

  3. Master – Master degrees in the US vary from 1.5 to two years.

SCHOLARSHIPS

Scholarships in the United States can be categorised into two:

  1. Those allocated by universities

  2. Those allocated to various funds and organisations, both public and private

The higher the level of the educational program, the better the chances of receiving a scholarship. This means it’ll be much easier for you to obtain a scholarship for a master program than for an undergraduate degree. If your academic performance has been brilliant, you’ve taken part in plenty of social events or volunteer work, or you’ve excelled in sports, you could be considered for a scholarship.

Each university has its own scholarship fund (usually financed through alumni contributions) with its own set of rules and requirements.

APPLICATION PROCEDURE

Since the USA application process varies depending on the level of education and the type of institution that you desire to study therefore it is essential that you find out all the details before hand.

Students applying for  the USA are recommended to begin the application procedure at least 8-10 months prior to the intake.

VISA PROCESS

Students need to have F1 visa to study in USA. This academic student visa is issued to international students who intend to enroll in colleges and universities, or join an English language program. You’re allowed to remain in the United States for up to 60 days beyond the time it takes to complete your degree, unless you have applied and have been approved to stay for a limited period under the OPT program

You should only apply for the F1 visa after receiving your acceptance letter, which states your enrollment.

  4. Prepare for the interview

  5. When you pass the interview, you’ll receive your passport sporting the all-important visa stamp after a few days.

EMPLOYMENT PROSPECTS

International students are allowed to work while studying and after graduation.

However, you should keep in mind that as long as you hold an F1 visa, you’re not allowed to accept off-campus employment without permission from the U.S. Citizenship & Immigration Services (USCIS). You will be allowed to work on campus without seeking prior permission from USCIS though.

COST OF
STUDYING & LIVING

Tuitions fees can range from $10,000 to $55,000 per year.

Depending on where you choose to stay (on or off campus) accommodation will typically range from $3000 to $8000 per year.
